Recently, I read a self-help book by author and motivational speaker, Mel Robbins. I wanted to provide a brief personal review of her book “The 5 Second Rule“. This book provides some great personal development ideas and different ways to improve your life with a very simple concept.
This concept involves counting backwards starting at 5 down to 1 as we would right before a rocket ship blasts off. The basic premise behind this concept that after counting backwards, you launch yourself into action to push through a negative situation or to attack a particular task that you’ve been avoiding or to give yourself the courage to handle any situation put before you. You can even use it to propel yourself out of bed in the morning. The concept of this book is that you can change your life inside of 5 seconds.
The book starts off with Mel explaining how she discovered the 5 second rule after dealing with depression, an unsuccessful career, relationship troubles, and a myriad of other daily challenges. One night while relaxing and watching television, she saw a rocket launch. Mel thought to herself, maybe launching myself out of bed like a rocket would be a great way to start the day. And so…it began. She counted backwards from 5, and without any hesitation, she rocketed out of bed.
She was so intrigued by this that she thought how great it would be to implement this in other areas of her life for a complete transformation. She realized almost instantly that it only takes 5 seconds to change your life for the better. The 5 second rule will work anywhere. With relationships, with work, improving your health, with starting a new business. This rule gives you courage to face any of life’s daily challenges.
This rule is a way to really re-program your mind that when in any situation where we would normally procrastinate or drag our feet, all we need to do is count backwards from 5, and then the most important part, take action. This is a complete paradigm shift and behavior change for all of us. But this simple principal can transform your life when put into action.
The majority of the chapters of this book are filled with testimonials of people that have used the rule and explained how they have benefited from it. I must admit that while reading this book, I didn’t think any area of my life could change by counting backwards from 5. But I used it one day while with a friend of mine and I had something heavy to talk him about and I didn’t think I had the courage to say anything. I remembered this book, and I actually counted in my head, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1……and I spoke. I didn’t even hesitate and it worked.
Another time I used it was at work and I needed to complete a project that I had put off for days because I just didn’t want to do it. But again, I remembered the book, and again I counted, and then I just started working without even so much of a second thought. I must say that I don’t remember to use the rule every single day with every situation that prevents itself, but it seemed to work for the two instances I implemented the concept.
The book is a great read and I learned a lot about self-improvement and the courage to face everyday challenges. You can check out a copy of the book here.
