SE Asia’s Female Founders Carve Out a Larger Share of Startup Funding in 2023

Startups with at least one female founder in Southeast Asia raised $1.41 billion in equity funding in 2023, or 18.3% of the total private capital secured during the year, according to a new report from DealStreetAsia.

The 2023 performance is a step up from the 12.6% share of funding garnered by female-founded startups in 2022.

The report, Female Founders in Southeast Asia 2023, covered over 700 equity funding deals concluded in Southeast Asia last year. Collectively, these deals raised $7.69 billion during the year.

Front & Female Awards Malaysia 2024: Meet the Winners

On March 7, 2024 we announced the six winners of our second Front & Female Awards Malaysia, which celebrates the individuals championing the progress of women.

Selected with the help of our expert voting committee, which includes some of the most influential leaders in Malaysia, these six women were chosen from a shortlist of 19 inspiring nominees, following a lengthy vetting procedure during which the names of almost 150 women had been submitted for consideration. The winners were recognised at a live dinnertime Awards ceremony, presented in partnership with BMW Malaysia, Sun Life Malaysia, Cartier, Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Minuty, Cosentino Malaysia and Hotel Indigo Kuala Lumpur on the Park.

MADCash’s Long Term Data Play, using 0% Microlending to Empower Women Entreprenuers, and Formalising the Business Model

Founded in April 2020, MADCash stands for Multiply, Assist, Donate Cash and the startup funds and grows unbanked and underbanked women entrepreneurs, aiming to create an alternative credit scoring to increase their future bankability.

The company runs on a proprietary technological platform that allows donors to contribute and see whom their funds are helping at any time, and enables the seamless process of micro-funding application, approval, onboarding, disbursement and of course – repayment monitoring.

To help take MADCash to the next stage, the startup announced a pre-series A funding round of RM5 million in October. The round was led by Artem Ventures with strong support from MSW Ventures and ScaleUp Founders Fund.

International Women’s Day: The tech industry needs to do more to be inclusive, say experts

It’s International Women’s Day (IWD) this Friday (March 8), and the theme for this year is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’ under the hashtag #InvestInWomen.

Industry experts have long acknowledged that bringing women into the tech industry and investing in their futures is a core part of building a skilled workforce that can help further advance the field.

Despite that, according to a study from PwC UK titled “Women in Tech: Time to close the gender gap”, only 27% of female respondents say they considered a career in tech, far short from the 62% of males.

The report goes on to say that 61% of female respondents were put off by the idea of a career in the field due to a lack of information and advice on what being in the industry entails.

There’s also the perception that the industry is male-dominated that pushes women away from the field, a notion that was further reinforced with reports like the “2023 Global Leadership Forecast” – from human resources consultancy Development Dimensions International – which stated that only 28% of leadership roles in tech are held by women.

All this on top of the allegations of workplace discrimination and unfair levels of compensation.

In the wake of Elon Musk’s acquisition of X (then Twitter) in 2022 and the subsequent abrupt mass layoffs, several former employees filed a class action lawsuit against the social media platform.
